What are a mother's rights over her children and her children's rights over her, and can a mother refuse her son's marriage to the woman he has chosen?

The mother's right over her child is embodied in showing her piety, keeping her good company, and being kind to her. This is among the most beloved deeds to Allah, even if she is a disbeliever. Piety also includes maintaining ties with the father's loved ones after his death. As for the son's right over the mother, it includes good upbringing, affection, tenderness, completing breastfeeding, education, and financial support if the father is not present. Regarding the mother's rejection of a girl, the reasons for the rejection must be understood. If they are legitimate, such as the girl having poor religious commitment, then her obedience is obligatory. However, if the rejection is due to personal whims unrelated to Islamic law, or because of the girl's religious observance, then her obedience is not mandatory. Rather, the son should strive to convince her and manage the situation tactfully, and seek mediation from someone they trust.
