Must one make up missed prayers from before commitment (to religious practice), and how are they to be made up?

Prayer is a great pillar of Islam and the first thing for which a servant will be held accountable. Allah has threatened severe punishment for those who abandon it or are negligent concerning it, as He states: "Then followed them an evil generation who neglected prayers and pursued lusts. So, they will soon meet evil," and His saying: "So woe to those who pray, those who are unmindful of their prayers." The majority of scholars agree that missed prayers must be made up, even if they are numerous. The making up of these prayers continues as long as it does not cause undue hardship to one's body or wealth. If one does not know the exact number of missed prayers, then one must continue to make them up until one is certain that their obligation has been fulfilled.
