What is the ruling on a wife going to her neighbor's house to try on new clothes that require her to take off and change her clothes, while her husband forbids her from doing so?
First: A woman merely changing her clothes in her neighbor's house in front of other women, while covering what is between the navel and the knee, is not considered forbidden. However, if there are non-mahram men in the neighbor's house and one of them sees her, she has committed a great evil, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Any woman who takes off her clothes in other than her husband's house has torn the veil between her and Allah Almighty."
Second: It is not permissible for a wife to leave her husband's house except with his permission. If she leaves without his permission, she is disobedient and rebellious against Allah and His Messenger, deserving of punishment. If the husband prevents his wife from going to her neighbor's house to try on clothes, then she has sinned by leaving, because she left for a matter that can be dispensed with.
