The 'iddah (waiting period) is obligatory for a woman whose husband has died. Her 'iddah is until she gives birth if she is pregnant. She must also observe mourning (ihdad) for the duration of her 'iddah. It is permissible for a woman in her 'iddah to chat online if she adheres to the Sharia controls and is not communicating with non-mahram men.
