What is the ruling on men wearing items plated with gold?

Wearing gold is forbidden for men, by consensus of the Prophetic hadiths. Among them is what Muslim narrated from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah saw a gold ring on a man's hand, so he removed it and said: "One of you intends for a burning coal from the Fire and places it on his hand." And likewise, what Imam Ahmad narrated from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-Aas, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever from my Ummah wears gold and dies while wearing it, Allah will forbid the gold of Paradise for him."

As for women, it is permissible for them to wear gold and silk, because adornment is one of their characteristics, whereas wearing gold for men contradicts masculinity.

The prohibition of gold for men includes pure gold, mixed gold, cut gold, connected gold, and inlaid gold. As for plated or gilded gold, scholars have differed concerning it. Some have forbidden it if anything can be extracted from it, while others have forbidden it if the plating is extensive or common, or if it is conspicuous and abundant, to avoid suspicion.
