What is the ruling regarding a mother who prays and recites the Qur’an and fulfills her duties towards her Lord, but her four sons, whose ages range between 10 and 20 years, do not perform the obligatory prayer despite all her attempts? And what advice should she be given in this situation?

Prayer is not obligatory upon a child until he reaches puberty, based on the hadith: "The pen has been lifted from three." However, he is commanded to pray at the age of seven and disciplined for it at ten. Scholars have differed on the obligation for parents to command their children to pray. The Hanafis, Shafi'is, and Hanbalis hold it to be obligatory, while the Malikis consider it recommended. If the parents fulfill their duty of upbringing and the child does not respond, there is no sin upon them, and the child bears the sin after reaching puberty. Parents are held accountable for negligence in upbringing, due to Allah's saying: "O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire," and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Each of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock." It is advised for the mother to continuously counsel her children and to discipline the younger ones if they abandon prayer.
