Is it obligatory to sell the deceased's property at a low price to pay off his debts, or is partial payment in installments sufficient? And is a vow of ongoing charity for the deceased acceptable, or is it preferable to direct the money towards paying off the debt, and is expiation due if the vow is not fulfilled?
The deceased's guardians should hasten to pay off their debts, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The soul of a believer is tied to their debt until it is paid off," and he also said: "Every sin of a martyr is forgiven except debt." If the creditors agree to installments, there is no harm, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would not pray over someone who had a debt unless they left enough to cover it or one of the Companions guaranteed it for them. As for vows, it is obligatory to fulfill them, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Him," unless they are unable to do so, in which case they must offer an expiation for an oath.
