Is wearing trousers or a thobe above the ankles (above the bones) a confirmed Sunnah or a recommended act, with clarification of the evidence and a response to those who exaggerate in shortening their garments?
Summary of the Fatwa: The one who shortens his garment is rewarded for it, because he is either abandoning something forbidden or something disliked. And abandoning what is forbidden or disliked with the intention of obedience is rewarded. Even if it is said that lengthening garments is permissible if it is free from pride, the one who shortens his garment is also rewarded; for shortening garments is a Sunnah in all cases, and the one who performs a Sunnah with the intention of emulation is rewarded. It is not necessary for the garment to reach halfway up the shin; rather, it is sufficient for it to be above the ankle. Some scholars are of the view that the Sunnah for the izar (lower garment) is to be halfway up the shins, while for the qamis (shirt), it can go lower than that, almost reaching the ankles.
