What is the ruling on wearing trousers below the ankle in contemporary societies without pride, if raising them above the ankle spoils one's appearance and draws attention, especially in the workplace?

The rulings of Islamic law were established for the benefit of Muslims. A Muslim should not consider the customs of people when it comes to an obligation or a prohibition. Isbal (letting one's garment hang below the ankles) to the extent that it touches the ankles is among the major sins and is forbidden in itself, not only when done out of arrogance. Thus, whoever considers isbal to be among the "minor issues" of the religion is mistaken. Isbal includes garments, trousers, and pants. The garment must be above the ankles, and tight trousers that describe the 'awrah (private parts) are not permissible to wear. There is no consideration for people's taste or opinion regarding shortening garments according to the Sunnah. However, one who adheres to the Sunnah should not overdo the shortening to the point of being ridiculed or creating barriers with people. He can lengthen the garment slightly, just above the ankles, to accommodate the custom of his country without violating the Shari'ah.
