If blood continues for seven days, then stops for seven days, then resumes on the fifteenth day from the beginning of its flow, and then ceases on the sixteenth day, it is considered menses (hayd) according to the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools if this pattern repeats three times. Otherwise, it is considered irregular bleeding (istihadah), which does not prohibit fasting or prayer. If we rule that the returning blood is hayd, then regarding the days of purity between the two bleedings, many scholars hold that it is a period of purity during which fasting and prayer are permissible after performing ghusl.
