Is it permissible for a husband and wife to hold hands in public?

Intertwining hands between spouses in public places is reprehensible (makrooh) if done for the purpose of sensual pleasure, as it violates modesty. However, if it is customary in that country, then there is no harm, though refraining from it is better. Scholars have considered a husband kissing his wife in front of people to be a breach of chivalry (khawarim al-muru'ah).
