Omar Al-Mukhtar: A mujahid sheikh from the Minfa tribe in Barqa, born in 1275 AH. He studied at the Zawiya of the Senussi, and became a sheikh over several zawiyas. He led the jihad against the Italians after their occupation of Benghazi in 1329 AH, and showed unparalleled steadfastness. He was captured after being wounded and his horse was hamstrung. He was interrogated, then hanged in 1350 AH in Benghazi at the age of seventy-five, while still personally engaging in jihad despite his advanced age.
