Is a memorizer of the Qur’an who does not open the Mushaf nor read from it sinful, on the pretext that he feels more humble from his memorization, knowing that dust has accumulated on the copies of the Mushaf in his house?

Scholars have differed on the preference between reading from the Mushaf (definition) (physical copy of the Quran) and from memory, holding three opinions:

1. Reading from the Mushaf is better: Many scholars opined on the superiority of looking at the Mushaf because it combines recitation and observation. They based their argument on narrations that indicate the desirability of this to prevent abandoning the Mushaf and to ensure accuracy in recitation. 2. Reading from memory is better: Others held the view that reading from memory is preferable if it leads to greater reflection (tadabbur) and humility (khushu'). 3. It depends on the situation: A group of scholars believes that what is better is that which achieves reflection and presence of heart, whether it is from memory or by looking (at the Mushaf). This is the most preponderant view. So, if reading from memory leads to greater humility and is closer to reflection, then it is better. And if reading from the Mushaf does so, then it is better.

Important note: It is necessary to move the lips to complete the recitation; mere looking with the eyes is not sufficient. In conclusion: There is no harm for a proficient hafiz (one who has memorized the Quran) who recites from memory. However, if he dedicates time to look at the Mushaf, it would be better for him and combine more virtues. Similarly, the Mushaf should not be abandoned in homes.
