Is the sister's statement: "It is not by the consensus of the Ummah, but Allah is One according to the Qur'an and Sunnah; because the consensus of the Ummah might say something wrong, so it is not valid for us to adopt it" considered unlawful? And is consensus (Ijma') in matters of creed or jurisprudence? And is the brother's statement that "the consensus of the Ummah is in jurisprudence and not creed; because they can be right and they can be wrong" unlawful?

The one who utters such words is ignorant of the technical meaning of Ijma' (consensus), for it is infallible and cannot contradict the Quran or Sunnah. It is incorrect to differentiate between Ijma' in Fiqh (jurisprudence) and 'Aqeedah (creed); indeed, the occurrence of Ijma' in 'Aqeedah is earlier and more reliable. Scholars have authored books on Ijma' that included matters of belief, such as Ibn Hazm's "Maratib al-Ijma'" and Ibn al-Qattan's "Al-Iqna' fi Masa'il al-Ijma'." The speaker should refrain from speaking about what he does not know, especially concerning the rulings of Islamic law.
