A woman becomes a wife through a valid Islamic marriage contract (aqd shari), and it becomes permissible for each spouse to enjoy the other, with the exception of anal intercourse and intercourse during menstruation. The wife is entitled to half of the mahr (dowry) immediately upon the contract, and she is also entitled to maintenance (nafaqa) and housing (sukna) if she makes herself available to the husband, even if he has not consummated the marriage. The husband's rights over the wife become established immediately upon the valid contract, such as obedience in what is good, not withholding herself from him, and good companionship, while he has no financial rights over her.
