What is the ruling on child maintenance, and when does this maintenance cease?

Scholars have agreed upon the obligation of a father to provide for his young children who have no wealth until they reach puberty, and for his disabled children until they become self-sufficient, whether they are adults or minors. However, providing for a child who possesses sufficient wealth is not obligatory, nor is it obligatory for a male child who has reached puberty and is capable of earning. Scholars have differed regarding the obligation of a father to provide for his adult, poor son who is capable of earning, and for his adult daughter. Most scholars are of the view that the father is obligated to provide for his daughter until she gets married.
