Does divorce take effect if the husband utters it after a quarrel and disputes, and a threat of divorce from the wife, and what is the ruling if the wife utters offensive words about the husband's family during the quarrel?

The occurrence of divorce is not prevented by the husband's anger unless his mind is completely lost. If the husband has not divorced his wife three times, he may take her back before her iddah (definition) (waiting period) expires. The spouses must repent to Allah for cursing, reviling, and beating without right, and they must live together with kindness. Furthermore, each of them must treat the other's family well, and help them honor their parents and maintain kinship ties, for this is part of good companionship and noble character. Celebrating birthdays is impermissible.
