What is moderation in Islam?

"Al-wasat" (moderation) means the best and highest part of something. It represents the most just and excellent of things, and both extremism (ghuluw) and negligence (taqsir) are blameworthy. Allah has made this nation a "wasat" nation, meaning just and exemplary. Both Islamic law and reason encourage moderation and balance, as it aligns with human nature, human weakness, and the changing circumstances of life. This Muslim nation is moderate in everything: it is moderate in prophethood and messengership, and moderate in its law and rulings. Similarly, Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah (the People of the Sunnah and the Community) are moderate within the nation, positioned between its various sects and doctrines.
