What is the ruling on young men and women conversing together online (chatting) in a group dedicated to Islamic Da‘wah, and is this permissible شرعًا (religiously) or not, especially since their conversations do not exceed matters of Islamic Da‘wah?

All praise is due to Allah, and prayers and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and companions.

We congratulate you on the blessing of guidance and your eagerness to call to Allah and to enjoin good and forbid evil, which is a great door to good. Islam has legislated precautions and blocked the means (sadd al-dhari'ah) between men and women due to the great potential for temptation, and this principle should always be kept in mind.

As for conversations between young men and women over the Internet for the purpose of da'wah (calling to Islam) and spreading good, there is no harm in them if they are in a public forum. However, we deem it necessary to prevent them if they are in private chat rooms, in order to block the means (to temptation) and decisively close the door to fitnah (temptation/strife).
