What is the concept of spinsterhood/bachelorhood?

Ibn Manzoor stated in Lisan al-Arab that a woman is called anasa unusan and inasan if her family prevented her from marrying until she passed the age of youth but had not yet reached old age. Al-Asma'i said: One does not say anasat or unnast, but rather unnist, in the passive voice.
