How do we respond to those who say that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded us to send blessings upon him out of his need for it or for fame?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) requested frequent prayers upon him and asking Allah for the Waseelah (a high station in Paradise) for him, which is for our benefit and a kindness to us. It is like his request for other good deeds, and the reward is of the same kind as the deed. So, whoever sends a single prayer upon him, Allah will send ten prayers upon him in return.

Ibn Taymiyyah said: "The Prophet's request for us to supplicate for him is a request for an act and an encouragement, not a request for a favor. His intention is to benefit us and be kind to us, just as he (peace be upon him) benefits from teaching us good and our supplication for him."

Al-Nafrawi held the view that the command to pray upon him is purely an act of worship and gratitude to him, or for seeking a perfection that Allah has linked to it. The more apparent view is that its benefit accrues to us because of him (peace be upon him).

Al-Sakhawi held the view that the purpose of praying upon him is to draw closer to Allah, obey His command, and fulfill his right. It is our recompense for his kindness to us, and its benefit returns to the one who prays, as it indicates a sincere creed, pure intention, and love. It is one of the greatest branches of faith, and its regular observance is a form of gratitude to him (peace be upon him).

Ibn Al-Qayyim mentioned 39 benefits that accrue to the one who prays upon him. As for the suspicion of seeking fame, it is refuted by the fact that Allah has already exalted his mention (peace be upon him).
