Is it permissible to wear white gold if it contains a percentage of pure gold?

Scholars have differed concerning the ruling on white gold. The Maliki school prohibits it absolutely, unless the gold content is one-third or less, in which which case it is disliked (makruh). As for the Hanbalis, it is permissible for men to use it if its color has changed and no gold comes off when it is rubbed or melted; this is their relied-upon position, and similarly for the Shafi'is and Hanafis. Based on this, the preponderant view is that it is not permissible to use white gold if its gold content exceeds fifty percent, such that some gold could be extracted from it.
