What is the ruling on obeying the father in rejecting a suitor whom the mother approves of?
God made the matter of marriage for men. It is not permissible for a woman to marry herself or others. Rather, a guardian is necessary, and the father is their origin, being prioritized over others in marrying off his daughters. This is because women are naturally inclined to be keen on men and are weaker in intellect, so the woman's affair was entrusted to her father. And if the father is the one who has the right of guardianship in marriage, then his opinion is prioritized in choosing a husband for his daughter, especially since he knows men and their circumstances better. However, this does not mean nullifying the mother's opinion; rather, she should be consulted, and her opinion considered, for it might be sound. The default is to prioritize the father's opinion and choice over the mother's opinion and choice, while comforting the mother's heart and respecting her opinion.
