Is feeling distressed and depressed and having doors closed inconsistent with faith in God's decree, or does it indicate a lack of reliance on Him?
Worry and grief afflict human beings, and believers are also subject to them. Ibn al-Qayyim states that grief is not sought after, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sought refuge from it. It is the companion of worry: worry is about what is to come, and grief is about what has passed. Both weaken the heart and resolve. The inhabitants of Paradise thank Allah for removing grief from them, which indicates that they suffered from it in this world. The believer is commanded to be patient, to seek reward from Allah, and to strive to repel grief by all possible means, because it hinders progress towards Allah, and Satan rejoices in it. Worry must be confronted and overcome through lawful means such as supplication (du'a), remembrance (dhikr), and perfecting reliance upon Allah.
