Is expiation obligatory for one who had intercourse with his wife during the daytime in Ramadan due to their ignorance of its prohibition, and is the wife’s fasting for two consecutive months and the daughter’s fasting for two non-consecutive months (due to menstruation) on behalf of her father considered sufficient?

Ignorance of the prohibition of intercourse during Ramadan negates the obligation of expiation, unlike ignorance of the obligation of expiation itself. So, if the spouses were ignorant of the prohibition of intercourse during the daytime of Ramadan, then nothing is incumbent upon them except making up that day. However, if they knew of the prohibition but were ignorant of the obligation of expiation, then expiation is incumbent upon the husband, and the majority of scholars also obligate it upon the wife, though the preponderant view is that it is not obligatory upon her. Fasting the expiation on behalf of the father is sufficient according to some scholars, and breaking the fast during menstruation days does not interrupt the continuity.
