Is it permissible for the mother to emancipate a slave on behalf of her son who ran over a child, causing her death, and upon whom is the expiation of emancipating a slave or fasting for two consecutive months, knowing that he started fasting twice but did not complete it?

It is permissible for a mother to donate a slave to her son so that he may emancipate him as expiation on his behalf, or for her to emancipate the slave on his behalf after informing him and obtaining his consent. For the expiations (emancipation, fasting, feeding) to be valid, the intention is a prerequisite. Therefore, if someone performs expiation on behalf of another without their command, it is not sufficient, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, actions are by intentions."
