What is the ruling on accidentally killing an animal while in a state of Ihram to perform Umrah in Mecca?

The Qur'an and Sunnah indicate the prohibition of hunting game for someone in a state of ihram for Hajj or Umrah, and the necessity of compensation for anyone who does so, as Allah states: "O you who have believed, do not kill game while you are in ihram. And whoever among you kills it intentionally – the penalty is an equivalent of what he killed among sacrificial animals." The game referred to here is wild terrestrial animals whose meat is permissible to eat. Scholars have agreed that there is no sin upon one who does so forgetfully or by mistake, but the majority have gone to the opinion that compensation is mandatory. Therefore, compensation is required for killing game for someone performing Umrah.
