The answer

A solitary report (Khabar al-Ahad) does not abrogate the Qur'an, whereas a consecutively transmitted (Sunnah Mutawatirah) can abrogate the Qur'an, according to the preponderant view, although this is a matter of disagreement. Accountability for inner thoughts ( an-nafs) was abrogated by His saying, the Most High: ﴿Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity﴾ (Al-Baqarah: 286). This was after the revelation of: ﴿To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And whether you disclose what is in your minds or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it. Then He will forgive whom He wills and punish whom He wills. And Allah is over all things competent﴾ (Al-Baqarah: 284), which was distressing for the Companions. So, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded them to say: "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the destination." Then Allah revealed thereafter: ﴿The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the destination."﴾ (Al-Baqarah: 285). Then Allah abrogated it with His saying: ﴿Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. For it is what it has earned, and against it is what it has incurred. Our Lord, do not impose upon us what we have no strength to bear, and pardon us, and forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.﴾ (Al-Baqarah: 286).
