Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, the cousin of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and his likeness in appearance and character, was among the foremost (in Islam), the emigrants, and the leaders of the Mujahidin. He was martyred in the Battle of Mu'tah after taking the banner following the martyrdom of Zayd ibn Harithah. He fought valiantly until his hands were severed, whereupon Allah compensated him with two wings with which he flies in Paradise, and for this reason, he was named "the Flyer."
