Is charity (sadaqah) obligatory on money earned from selling a virtual game account that contained unlawful transactions, such as profits from gambling, theft, and collecting gifts from non-Muslim holidays, knowing that the phone purchased with part of this money was later sold?

You have done well to repent from the game, and we ask Allah to accept your repentance. The ruling on giving charity from the money earned by selling the account varies:

- If you believed that playing and selling were permissible, or if you were ignorant of the ruling, then there is no blame on you regarding the money.

- If you knew that the game and selling were forbidden, then it is better for you to give the money in charity to clear your conscience and complete your repentance, even though the obligation of doing so is a matter of dispute.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah inclined towards not asserting the obligation of giving charity in this situation; for the Muslim who made an interpretative error (mutaa'awwil) or was ignorant and has repented, what he deemed permissible is forgiven, and what he seized becomes lawful for him, just as a disbeliever who embraces Islam is forgiven for what he deemed permissible. The verse: {So whoever receives an admonition from his Lord and desists, he may have what has already passed} (2:275) applies to the Muslim by a higher priority. Allah knows best.
