The Qarmatian movement is a destructive esoteric movement attributed to Hamdan ibn al-Ash'ath. Among their beliefs is the annulment of fundamental Islamic rulings such as fasting and prayer, and the invalidation of belief in the resurrection and punishment. They consider Paradise to be the worldly pleasures and torment to be the preoccupation of followers of religious laws with acts of worship. They make people partners in women, interpret fasting as refraining from revealing secrets, resurrection as being guided to their doctrine, a prophet as a person upon whom a divine power has overflowed, and the Quran as Muhammad's expression of knowledge. They believe in the existence of two ancient gods, and they insinuate their blasphemous ideas under the slogan of love for the Ahl al-Bayt (the Prophet's household).
