Is it permissible to communicate with or befriend a young man who drinks alcohol and commits sins?

A Muslim is commanded to choose friends wisely and avoid bad company. Beware of associating with this young man, even if he loves you. Do not prevent yourself from speaking to him and seeing him within narrow limits, for the purpose of enjoining good and forbidding evil, while balancing this with consideration of the benefit. If communicating with him will rectify his behavior, then that is more appropriate. But if it will harm you or will not change him, then it is more appropriate not to mix with him.
