The verses recount the story of Ibrahim and his son, the sacrifice, where Allah gave Ibrahim glad tidings of a forbearing boy, who was Ismail. When Ismail grew up, Ibrahim saw in a dream that he was slaughtering him. So he told his son, and Ismail agreed to his Lord's command with patience and obedience. When they submitted to Allah's command and Ibrahim attempted to slaughter his son, Allah called out to him that he had indeed fulfilled the vision and ransomed him with a great sacrifice.

Ibn Kathir clarifies that the sacrificed son was Ismail for several reasons: 1. Ismail was Ibrahim's first son and older than Isaac. 2. The command to sacrifice the firstborn is a more severe trial. 3. The glad tidings of Ismail as a forbearing boy were mentioned before the story of the sacrifice, and then the glad tidings of Isaac were mentioned afterwards. 4. Allah promised Ibrahim that Isaac would have offspring and that Jacob would be from his progeny, so it is not permissible for him to be commanded to be slaughtered while young. 5. Describing Ismail as forbearing suits this occasion.
