What is the ruling on a 26-year-old never-married woman marrying a widower who has two children? Is there a story from the Sunnah that clarifies this, and how should this situation be dealt with—through consultation or through istikhara?

The correct standard for choosing a husband is his religious commitment (deen) and character (khuluq), as stated in the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "If there comes to you one whose character and religious commitment you are pleased with, then marry [your daughter] to him. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption."

There is no objection to a virgin marrying a man who is already married and has children, whether his wife is alive or deceased. The essential considerations are the man's religious commitment and character, and the woman's acceptance of him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) married Aisha when she was a virgin, and he had children. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) married Umm Kulthum, daughter of Ali, when she was young.

If the woman's guardian approves of this man, then there is no impediment to the marriage. It is commendable to consult wise people from the family and people of virtue, as well as to perform Istikhara concerning this matter.
