What is the reason for the disbelievers questioning only their skins about their testimony, to the exclusion of their hearing and sight? Is that because their skins will be tormented along with them? Does this indicate that their hearing and sight will not be with them in Hell, despite the mention of hearing and sight for the people of the Fire in Surat Al-A'raf? And are sinners considered enemies of Allah?

Some exegetes mentioned reasons for the skins speaking instead of the hearing and sight. Among them are that the perception of the skins is more astonishing, or that they are addressed in rebuke, or because they encompass the senses of touch and taste. As for the hearing, sight, and speech of the people of Hell, it is more apparent that they are first punished with deafness, blindness, and muteness, and then their senses are restored to them. There are three aspects to reconcile the apparent contradiction between the verses that mention the blindness, deafness, and muteness of the disbelievers, and the verses that mention their sight, hearing, and speech: The first (which is the most apparent) is that their senses are restored to them after they are resurrected as blind, mute, and deaf. The second is that they do not see, hear, or speak that which pleases them or provides an argument, as if they do not discern the truth. The third is that blindness, deafness, and muteness afflict them after Allah Almighty says to them: ("Remain humiliated therein and do not speak to Me.") The disobedient monotheists are not entirely enemies of Allah; rather, they have Allah's guardianship commensurate with their faith and Allah's enmity commensurate with their disobedience.
