Why does Satan appear to the righteous among the predecessors but not to those who came after them?
The manifestation of Satan to humans is permissible and real, occurring with those who are advanced and those who are delayed. An example of this is the report in the Two Sahihs about Satan manifesting to Abu Hurayrah. Devils sometimes appear in the form of a human, or their voices are heard without their bodies being seen. They may also take strange forms, and are known to be from among the Jinn, or they lie and claim to be angels. They may speak to people directly or through an intermediary. They are capable of carrying a person and transporting them from one place to another, and bringing objects, but they do not do so except with those who are misguided, disbelievers, and those who commit evil deeds, even if they outwardly appear righteous. Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned concerning Al-Hallaj that devils sometimes served him, such as bringing him sweets from Yemen by means of a devil. This phenomenon exists in all times and is not restricted to a specific era.
