What is the ruling on hanging drawings of jinn and devils in imaginary forms, such as depicting them with tails, sharp teeth, and horns, and is it true that there is no harm in that because they are not animate beings?

Scholars have differed regarding the seeing of jinn in their original form. Some have denied it, such as Al-Shafi'i, who invalidated the testimony of anyone who claimed to have seen them. Others, including Ibn Hajar, hold the view that seeing them is possible if the jinn assume forms other than their original one, and prophetic traditions support this.

As for depicting jinn, its ruling is the same as depicting animate beings, whether humans or animals, which is forbidden according to the majority of scholars, because they are living, rational, and accountable beings. Legal texts have indicated the prohibition of depicting animate beings generally, and that whoever does so will be punished until he breathes life into them, which he will not be able to do.
