Is the Hadith narrated by Ibn Ishaq sound, in which the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to Abu Talib: "O uncle, say it, and by it I shall intercede for you on the Day of Resurrection"? And Abu Talib replied: "By Allah, were it not for fear of disgrace upon you... I would have said it"? And did Abu Talib embrace Islam before his death when he moved his lips, as Al-Abbas understood?

The correct view is that Abu Talib died as a polytheist. The narrations indicating his conversion to Islam are weak and contradicted by more authentic narrations, such as the Hadith in Bukhari from Ibn al-Musayyab, which states that Abu Talib died adhering to the religion of Abd al-Muttalib. The verses {It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for polytheists} (9:113) and {Indeed, you do not guide whom you like} (28:56) were revealed concerning him. Furthermore, the Hadith of Al-Abbas indicates that Abu Talib is in a shallow pool of fire, and were it not for the Prophet, he would have been in the lowest depths of Hell. Ali ibn Abi Talib confirms this when he said to the Prophet: "Indeed, your uncle has passed away." The Prophet replied: "Go and bury him." Ali said: "He died as a polytheist." The Prophet said: "Go and bury him." Despite his death as a polytheist, he has a distinction over the rest of the polytheists of Quraysh due to what he did for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and it has been narrated that he is in a shallow pool of fire.
