What is the ruling on one who buys something intending to return it after using and benefiting from it?

The intention to return a purchased item does not entail a ruling, due to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "Indeed, Allah has forgiven my Ummah for whatever occurs within their souls, as long as they do not act upon it or speak of it."

As for the actual return without a legitimate reason, it is not permissible except with the seller's consent. The sin increases if the return is made through deception or lying. After the sale is concluded and the two parties separate, ownership of the item transfers to the buyer and the price to the seller. Neither party is allowed to renege except with the other's consent, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The two parties to a transaction have the option [to annul it] as long as they have not separated."

However, if the buyer finds a defect in the item, he has the right to return it even if he has benefited from it, based on the hadith: "The produce is in exchange for the liability," and he has the option between keeping it or annulling the sale.
