Is a person afflicted with schizophrenia required to perform Salah?

If an illness does not affect the intellect, then prayer is obligatory upon the sick person. However, if it affects the intellect, then the afflicted person is not obligated to pray during their state of insanity, nor is it obligatory upon them to make up what they missed. This is the view of the Hanbalis, Shafi'is, and Malikis. The Hanafis disagreed, stating that it is obligatory to make up the prayers if the afflicted person was insane for five prayers.

As for when an insane person regains consciousness during the time of prayer, the Hanafis held that they catch the fard (obligatory prayer) if there remains enough time for a single takbirat al-ihram (definition) (opening takbir). The Malikis and some Shafi'is said that the fard becomes obligatory and is caught if there remains enough time for one rak'ah (unit of prayer) along with the time needed for purification, and this is the most correct view.

If a person catches a part of the prayer time and then becomes insane, the Hanbalis said that the prayer becomes obligatory upon them and they must make it up when they regain consciousness. However, Al-Shafi'i and Ishaq held that making up the prayer is not obligatory unless enough time has passed to perform it, and this is the most correct view.
