What is the wisdom behind the gradual prohibition of alcohol, and is it possible to gradually prohibit its consumption for those who drink it now? And why is the prophetic gradualism not adopted as a sunnah for Muslims nowadays?

A distinction is made between those who were born and raised in polytheism, like the generation of the Companions, and those who were born and raised in Islam, and those who embraced Islam late. The hypocrites during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, believed with their tongues out of fear. As for today, disbelief after faith is apostasy, because they were born upon the natural disposition of Islam (fitra). Those who preceded in embracing Islam progressed through the rulings gradually, whereas those who came later must adhere to the abrogating ruling directly. The gradual promulgation of rulings was by Allah's wisdom, and after the new ruling is revealed, it must be complied with without any dispensation. Gradualism in da'wah (preaching) and explanation is required, starting with what is most important, then what is next most important, and taking into account the condition of the person being invited to Islam, without making lawful what is unlawful or changing a ruling.
