What is the reason for the revelation of the verse: "Do not approach prayer while you are in a state of drunkenness," and does it mean that drinking alcohol is permissible after prayer?

The verse (Do not approach prayer while you are in a state of drunkenness) represents a stage in the gradual prohibition of alcohol, where the prohibition was temporary, limited to prayer times. Then, the final and absolute prohibition of alcohol was revealed. Ibn Uthaymeen clarified the stages of this gradual process, which began with preparing the souls (They ask you concerning wine and gambling), then practicing abstaining from it during prayer times (Do not approach prayer while you are in a state of drunkenness), leading to its absolute prohibition at all times (Indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing to] stone altars, and divining arrows are but defilement). The hadiths of Omar and Abu Hurairah supported this gradual approach in legislation. The Ummah has reached a consensus on the prohibition of alcohol and that it is one of the major sins.
