What is the interpretation of the narration: "We came upon Asma, daughter of Abu Bakr, and we asked her about temporary marriage (mut'ah) with women. She said: 'We practiced it during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him'"? And did Lady Asma herself engage in temporary marriage?

The aforementioned Hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud Al-Tayalisi with the wording "mut'at an-nisa" (temporary marriage with women), but this was a mistake on his part. The correct wording is "mut'at al-hajj" (enjoying the benefits of Hajj). Muslim and An-Nasa'i narrated it with different wordings from Shu'bah, from Muslim Al-Qurri. Some of these narrations explicitly mention "mut'at al-hajj," some mention "al-mut'ah" (enjoyment) without restriction, and some express doubt between Hajj and women. This is further confirmed by other narrations of the story from Asma, may Allah be pleased with her, which mention "mut'at al-hajj," and that Asma was married to Az-Zubayr ibn Al-Awwam. It is inconceivable that she would have practiced mut'at an-nisa. Even if the wording "mut'at an-nisa" were confirmed, it would be in the context of informing about its initial permissibility, not that Asma herself practiced it. Mut'at al-hajj is established and legitimate, and the Companions performed it with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. It is not necessary that all Companions performed it. We advise against engaging in debates with opponents unless one is proficient in the Islamic sciences.
