What about feeling alienated when hearing Allah's attributes – such as the Shin, the Foot, and the Image – and will Allah hold a believer accountable if he feels that way? And will He hold us accountable for what is hidden in our hearts, as stated in Surat Al-Baqarah? And has the verse been completely abrogated, so it has no effect whatsoever? And how will we see Allah on the Day of Resurrection, and what is the meaning of: "They will see Him, but they will not encompass Him"? And how will Allah put His Foot into Hellfire? And how is it that the fingers are five in number, along with a hand, a forearm, and a shin?
It is obligatory for a Muslim to submit to what has been established from Allah and His Messenger, and to believe in what Allah has described Himself with and what His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) has described Him with, without distortion or nullification, and without asking 'how' or making comparisons. In this matter, infallibility lies in describing Allah as He has described Himself and His Messenger has described Him, while purifying Him from any resemblance to creation.
A Muslim must strive to remove any discomfort or lack of submission to the texts, as Allah Almighty said: {But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that which disputes them, and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission.} [An-Nisa': 65].
As for inner thoughts and passing notions, there is no accountability for them unless they are uttered, acted upon, or firmly settled as a belief.
The verse {Whether you disclose what is in your minds or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it.} [Al-Baqarah: 284] is abrogated by the verse: {Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.} [Al-Baqarah: 286]. So, Allah does not burden a soul beyond its ability, and a person is not burdened with the whispers of the self and its inner thoughts that cannot be repelled.
The Salaf (pious predecessors) forbade asking about the 'how' of Allah's attributes, saying: "The 'istiwa' (Allah's rising above the Throne) is known, but its 'how' is unknown; belief in it is obligatory, and asking about it is an innovation." For the knowledge of 'how' the attributes are possessed depends on the knowledge of the 'how' of the Essence, and no one comprehends the Essence with knowledge. So, there is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
The meaning that creation does not encompass Allah with knowledge is that they do not fully comprehend Him. Comprehension and encompassing are negated from Allah, as Allah Almighty said: {No vision can grasp Him, but He grasps all vision.} [Al-An'am: 103]. The negation of comprehension does not necessitate the negation of seeing; rather, it indicates the affirmation of seeing without encompassing.
