Is it obligatory to complete research agreed upon for money, knowing that it might be unlawful?

The ruling on assisting students with research has been detailed previously. If the completion of the research for the students will involve something unlawful, then you are not obligated to continue with it. Rather, you must stop immediately and return the financial compensation if you have received it. In such a case, there is no consideration for the agreement, as it pertains to an unlawful matter. Therefore, a promise to do something forbidden is not permissible to fulfill; rather, it is religiously obligatory to break it. It is stated in the Fiqh Encyclopedia: "Whoever promises what is impermissible or agrees to a sin is not allowed to fulfill it. Rather, by breaking it, they are obedient and fulfilling an obligation."
