It is permissible to touch fire without harm with the intention of remembering the fire of Hell, and some of the Salaf did this, among them Umar ibn al-Khattab and al-Ahnaf ibn Qays, just as it was mentioned concerning Ibn Masud, Uways al-Qarani, Rabi ibn Khuthaym, and others that they were affected by seeing fire or hearing its sound, remembering the fire of the Hereafter.
