What is your opinion on Allah's sitting on the Throne, as the statement of a Shaykh from among Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah regarding this has caused us confusion?

The Salaf interpreted istiwa’ (Allah's 'settling' or 'establishing Himself') as elevation, highness, and firmness. Interpreting it as 'sitting' was not widespread among them. Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned this interpretation from Kharijah ibn Mus'ab, and al-Daraqutni affirmed it, but it is more pious to refrain from it. Istiwa’ is an attribute that we affirm as it came, without takyeef (questioning how) or tamtheel (likening it to creation), but rather in a manner befitting Allah's Majesty. His essence and attributes do not resemble the essences and attributes of created beings. If the interpretation of 'sitting' is proven, it is to be understood according to this great principle: "There is nothing like unto Him."
