Is it permissible to say that Allah sits on the Throne, or to describe Him as sitting on the Throne while He is doing something, and is seeking forgiveness and resolving not to repeat it sufficient for one who said it unintentionally, without intending mockery?

What is affirmed regarding Allah Almighty is His istiwa (establishment) upon the Throne, in a manner befitting His Majesty. This has been mentioned in seven places in the Book of Allah. The well-known interpretation of istiwa is highness and elevation. As for "sitting," it has been mentioned in narrations that are not authentic, though some of the Salaf affirmed it as an interpretation of istiwa. Should its authenticity be assumed, it is then obligatory to believe in the negation of resemblance (to creation). The more appropriate approach is to pause regarding this term due to its absence in the authentic Book and Sunnah, and in the statements of the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them. Therefore, we do not see fit to express it with the term "sitting"; rather, it is said: "He istawa upon the Throne," and istiwa is interpreted as highness and elevation. And for whoever adheres to what has been transmitted from some of the Salaf, there is no denunciation against him, but this should not be stated in front of the general public.
