What is the authenticity of the widely circulated story about Umar ibn al-Khattab flogging the son of Amr ibn al-Aas to death for drinking alcohol, and Umar's statement to him before his death: "Inform the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that Umar upholds the hudud punishments"?

The circulated report about the death of Abd al-Rahman ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with them both, due to his father hitting him, is incorrect. What is established is that Abd al-Rahman drank wine in Egypt, so Amr ibn al-Aas applied the prescribed punishment to him. Then Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, requested his return to Medina and disciplined him. Abd al-Rahman died a short while later, and people assumed that his death was due to Umar’s discipline, which is a mistaken assumption. He died due to his destiny, and not because of being lashed by Umar or Amr.
