What is the ruling on shaving hair at the edge of the ear?

Shaving some head hair from the earline is considered "qazaʿ" (partial shaving), which is disliked. It involves shaving part of the head and leaving part of it, due to the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibition of it and his command to either shave all the hair or leave all of it. "Qazaʿ" includes shaving certain areas from the sides of the head and leaving the rest, or shaving the middle and leaving the sides, or shaving the sides and leaving the middle, or shaving the front and leaving the back. If this method is specific to some disbelievers, then it is impermissible due to the imitation involved, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them."
